Japan is taking a major step toward bringing crypto to the masses—one that will directly affect millions of people.
Starting November 1, the country is changing its tax-free system: instead of getting a discount directly at the register, shoppers will receive a refund. And here’s the key point: tourists will be able to receive their tax refunds in JPYC, a yen stablecoin on the Avalanche blockchain.
It’s easy to imagine the scale: more than 30.7 million foreign visitors traveled to Japan from January to September alone. If even one percent of them choose to receive their refunds in stablecoins, that would bring a huge number of people from the real economy and tourism sector into Web3.
It seems mass adoption of stablecoins won’t begin with grand declarations, but with everyday shopping.#
