The $6.3 billion attack on Binance exposed an uncomfortable truth: the danger wasn’t in the private key, but on an engineer’s laptop.

The attacker used a compromised device to access a service container and authorize withdrawals. The exchange managed to freeze around $3 billion on-chain, including the $1.28 billion across two addresses and an amount in FDUSD blocked by First Digital.

But the race against time revealed a structural flaw. Bitquery data indicates that $729 million in USDT had already been swapped for ETH and TRX before the freeze. Six of the 11 wallets targeted by Tether were already empty.

The lesson is harsh: stablecoins can be frozen, but completed swaps cannot be undone.

The focus is shifting now. Security isn’t just about safeguarding keys; it’s about controlling access permissions, automations, and internal infrastructure. Operational risk is the real blind spot for exchanges.
