I was scrolling at dinner time when the same headline hit three different feeds within a minute. I thought it was another fake screenshot. It wasn't. 😶

What happened

On the evening of October 29, attackers pushed unauthorized withdrawals through Binance's hot wallet infrastructure across roughly ten blockchains, and Binance puts the total impact at about $6.3 billion. That makes it about four times the Bybit theft and the largest crypto heist on record. (socradar) (socradar)

The speed is what keeps bothering me. The drain started around 20:05 UTC with five wallets sending XRP to a single attacker address, and the Ethereum hot wallet was emptied in under four minutes. The attacker had been preparing since the day before. A fresh operator wallet was funded through Tornado Cash on October 28, and the attack code was tested early on the 29th. (socradar) (socradar)

What Binance has said

Binance suspended all deposits and withdrawals and is working with law enforcement. It says it will cover all losses and that user funds are safe. About $3 billion has been frozen, including $2.3 billion in USDT and USDC, while the suspected attacker is moving assets through decentralized trading and lending platforms. (NBC News) (CoinDesk)

I'd flag one thing. The Washington Post describes the $6.3B as user funds affected, while Binance says user funds are safe. Those two statements can both be true if Binance absorbs the loss. That's why the coverage promise matters more than the headline.

The market reaction

It was a wobble, not a panic. Bitcoin slipped 2.8% to around $78,490, ETH fell 3.8% to $2,243 and BNB dropped 3.5% to $717. The surprise was that Hyperliquid's HYPE jumped 17% as money looked for somewhere else to sit. (CNBC) (CNBC)

My honest take

I want to believe the "all losses covered" promise, and I think they can afford it. But a promise on day one is cheap. What I'm watching is the cause, the timeline for reopening withdrawals, and whether the $3B freeze turns into actual recovery. The cause hasn't been disclosed in anything I could find, so anyone telling you exactly how it happened is guessing.

What you should do today

Don't rush to move funds. Withdrawals are paused anyway.

Treat every "claim your compensation" link as a scam. Hacks always bring a wave of fake recovery pages.

Get updates only from Binance's verified accounts, not from forwarded screenshots.

Re-check your 2FA and anti-phishing code today, even though this wasn't a user-side breach.
