Expected to rise 0.1%, but instead fell 0.1%—France’s Q3 GDP has already poured cold water on expectations for tonight’s eurozone report.

France’s statistics agency INSEE released its preliminary Q3 figures today:
1. Quarter over quarter: -0.1%, versus market expectations of +0.1%; Q2 was flat at 0.0%.
2. Year over year: -0.1%, versus expectations of +0.3%; Q2 was +0.5%.
3. Investment and foreign trade dragged on growth: gross fixed capital formation fell 0.6% quarter over quarter, exports fell 1.7%, and foreign trade contributed -0.6 percentage points to growth.
4. Consumption provided support: household consumption rose 0.4% quarter over quarter, government consumption rose 0.3%, and changes in inventories contributed 0.4 percentage points.

How to read this: The most notable thing about France’s figures isn’t the -0.1% itself, but the mixed picture: consumption is still growing, while investment and exports are retreating. Consumption-driven growth can’t make up for investment falling for two consecutive quarters and exports reversing from +2.8% to -1.7%. The eurozone’s overall preliminary Q3 figures are due at 18:00 Beijing time tonight. Consensus is +0.2% quarter over quarter and +1.1% year over year. France has come in weak, so whether the overall figures can meet consensus tonight is now a key variable. If the overall figures also come in below consensus, bets on a December rate hike will need to be reassessed. For risk assets such as $BTC , it’s better to wait for the overall eurozone figures tonight before acting. Treat individual-country data as a signal of the wind, not as a directional cue.
