It’s impossible for a single operations engineer to move $6.3 billion on their computer.
Even CZ @cz_binance himself probably couldn’t pull it off.
TRM, an on-chain analytics firm, believes that the private keys weren’t lost, but that the hackers gained the ability to make Binance’s @binance hot-wallet signing system sign transactions on their behalf.
That’s how wallets across multiple chains were drained one after another over the course of about half an hour.
Whoever did this—the person or team—must be very familiar with Binance’s entire internal operating process.
TRM is also highly confident that this was North Korea’s TraderTraitor, the same group that stole $1.5 billion from Bybit last year.
Looks like from now on, major projects, DEXs, and CEXs will have to make “Kim XX is XX” part of their background-check oath.
Binance says withdrawals are expected to resume within 48 hours.
Please wait for the next official announcement. 🫡
