There are new developments in the Binance security incident, and this time there’s quite a lot to unpack 👀

The latest official estimate puts affected assets at around $6.3 billion, of which about $3 billion has been frozen. Chainalysis, meanwhile, believes at least $5.9 billion was stolen.

What’s even more noteworthy is the attack vector:

Preliminary investigations suggest the issue may have stemmed from an engineer’s compromised laptop. The attacker used it to gain access to the system and submit unauthorized withdrawal transactions.

However, there’s currently no evidence that wallet private keys were leaked 🤨

An incident on this scale may not require directly compromising wallet private keys. Internal access controls themselves may be a weak point.

And the impact has already gone beyond asset losses: suspended withdrawals and disrupted fund transfers for market makers could further affect market liquidity.

Next, we’ll be watching for the detailed incident report, the resumption of withdrawals, and how much of the remaining funds can be recovered.
