Nvidia plans to spend about $12.9 billion to acquire Hugging Face, and the U.S. Department of Justice is already looking into it.
The core question is simple: this platform is a marketplace for distributing models. If the seller of the shovels also takes over the marketplace, can its rivals still compete?
The same scrutiny also covers several of its previous acquisitions and sales practices. Regulators didn’t just take an interest today; they’re weaving a tighter net. Nvidia says it will remain open to collaboration. Regulators want evidence, not statements.
The impact on the market is more likely to be medium to long term: orders are still coming in short term, but the question of whether Nvidia’s “wings will be clipped” will keep being priced in over the long term. The more profitable AI becomes, the brighter the antitrust spotlight shines. It’s an added challenge that comes with growing the business—and there’s no escaping it.
When investing, I’ll account for regulatory risk separately rather than lumping it together with next quarter’s earnings. Earnings can exceed expectations, and regulators can suddenly change their tune; these are two separate things and should be considered separately.
