Why is the strategy that made you money last month destroying your account today?
Many traders blame their psychology, lack of discipline, or a supposed losing streak when they see a string of consecutive losses. The reality is much colder and more objective. The math doesn't lie: your strategy hasn't broken; what changed was the market's rhythm, and you're still trading by the same rules without validation, while also believing you'll have the same edge in every market regime.
That’s why one of the biggest trading mistakes in traditional technical trading is a lack of adaptability. Applying a system based on moving-average crossovers (trend-following) when the price enters an accumulation or distribution range is a statistical guarantee of failure.
Traditional indicators lag because they’re merely derivatives of past prices. They can’t classify the current environment. In fact, this is one of the things to consider when building a strategy that can beat the market—or at least recover quickly from losing streaks when regime changes occur
This is something I’ve been obsessing over a little, because it’s difficult to identify by eye, and even harder with indicators
That’s why, to trade professionally, the first mandatory step isn’t to look for an entry; it’s to identify the Market Regime you’re trading in
Here are a few steps for identifying the Market Regime (with a crypto focus) using these three basic statistical and structural filters:
1. Measure Volatility Compression (the mathematical spring)
Crypto markets move in cycles of expansion and contraction. Major trends emerge from periods of extreme calm.
How to identify it: Use Bollinger Bands. When the bands narrow to their lowest level in the last 100 candles, the market is in a Low-Volatility / Narrow-Range regime.
Algorithmic rule: Don’t look for reversals here; the market is building energy for an imminent breakout.
2. Evaluate Structural Momentum (the trend filter)
Determine whether the price has a dominant direction or lacks long-term strength (daily, weekly, monthly time frame).
How to identify it: Use the ADX (Average Directional Index) indicator combined with a 50-period Exponential Moving Average (EMA).
Trending Regime: If the ADX is above 25 and the price consistently stays above (or below) the 50 EMA, you’re in a mature trend. Continuation strategies are the only valid ones.
Mean-Reversion Regime: If the ADX is below 20 and the price repeatedly crosses the 50 EMA up and down like a pendulum, you’re in a sideways range.
3. Analyze the Distribution of Returns (the volume footprint)
In crypto, ranges trade with declining volume and concentrated volume profiles (High-Volume Nodes or POC). Trends trade with an imbalance between supply and demand.
How to identify it: Measure the ATR (Average True Range). If the price rises while the ATR falls, the trend is losing steam, and the market is likely to transition to a mean-reversion or distribution regime.
So, if you don’t know which regime you’re operating in, you’re playing Russian roulette with your personal or funded account.
That’s why, through quantitative development, I’ve automated this process using a private algorithm that analyzes the statistical structure of 5 cryptocurrencies simultaneously in real time. The system processes the data and mathematically classifies whether the asset is in a mature trend, a sideways range, or a high-volatility environment before risking a single dollar.
It doesn’t tell you where the price is going; it tells you which rules of the game give you the odds in your favor today.
The app is currently in its Beta Phase ahead of the official launch, and the software’s engine remains completely private. However, I’ve decided to open access to a few users
If you’re tired of trading blind, relying on faith, and want to know the exact mathematical regime of the major cryptocurrencies so you can adjust your rules, comment the word REGIME and I’ll explain how to join this Beta Phase, available for a very limited time
As George Soros wrote: "Markets are in a constant state of flux and uncertainty; money is made by discounting the obvious and betting on the unexpected. The problem is that regime change happens just when everyone has gotten used to the previous one"
These are times for reading.
