Today, there’s talk of a massive outflow of funds from Binance wallets. Amid the noise and figures changing by the hour, here’s what’s actually confirmed and what isn’t yet.
Quick summary
Binance says it is investigating a “potential security issue” and that users’ funds are “completely safe.”
It temporarily suspended withdrawals as a precaution and will resume them once the issue is resolved.
Binance has not yet officially confirmed a hack, the amount involved, or the cause.
Tether and Circle together froze nearly US$2.4 billion in stablecoins linked to the incident.
What happened?
On-chain analysts detected that one of Binance’s hot wallets (those connected to the internet and used by the exchange to operate) moved billions of dollars in assets to external addresses. The main movement took place after 4:24 p.m. Venezuela time. Binance’s first response on X came around 5:29 p.m.
What are Binance and CZ saying?
Binance referred to a “possible security issue” and urged people to watch out for scams. Its founder, Changpeng Zhao (CZ), wrote that “it does look like a hack” and that, as a shareholder, he hopes users’ funds will be fully covered. Note: CZ no longer runs Binance.com, and that statement expresses an expectation, not an official commitment from the exchange.
How much money was moved? Why are the figures different?
Because each tracker counts different wallets and networks. Depending on the tally, estimates range from around US$2.8 billion to more than US$5.5 billion. Binance has not published an amount. If you see an “exact” figure tonight, treat it with caution.
Tether and Circle: freezes
Tether reported freezing more than 1.567 billion USDT, and Circle more than 800 million USDC. Stablecoins can be frozen, but ETH and BTC cannot, so the final loss remains uncertain.
How might it have happened?
Several analysts point to a malicious EIP-7702 delegation, an Ethereum feature that lets an account execute code from a contract. Activating it requires a signature from the wallet’s own key, so the theory is that a key or signing process was compromised. This is on-chain analysis, not confirmation from Binance. Also, the Bitcoin and Tron outflows still have no clear explanation.
Questions you’re probably asking yourself
Are my funds safe?
Binance says they are. The exchange has SAFU, its emergency fund, which fully covered the theft of 7,000 BTC in 2019. Binance has not yet said whether it will use the fund this time.
Can I withdraw?
Not for now: withdrawals are temporarily suspended on several networks and, according to TechCrunch, trading on Binance Alpha has also been paused. There is no official date for when services will resume.
What about P2P or deposits in bolívares?
Binance has not provided details on the status of specific services such as P2P or the new bolívar on-ramp. Check official announcements before starting any transaction.
What happened to the market?
Bitcoin fell around 2.6% and BNB around 7% after the news, and liquidations worth hundreds of millions of dollars were reported within an hour.
Should I withdraw everything as soon as withdrawals resume?
That’s a personal decision, and there’s no one-size-fits-all answer. What you can do is understand the options: keeping funds on an exchange means trusting its custody, while self-custody gives you control of your keys but also makes you fully responsible. Decide calmly, not out of the panic of the moment.
Beware of scams
After every major incident, fake support accounts and supposed “compensation forms” appear. Remember:
Use only the official app and Binance’s verified channels (@binance on X and the announcements page).
Never share your seed phrase, 2FA codes, or keys.
Don’t open links from emails, messages, or DMs, even if they look official. Type in the Binance address yourself.
Be wary of anyone promising to “recover your funds” or “advance your refund.”
Secure your account today
Enable or check your anti-phishing code.
Use an authenticator app or security key instead of SMS.
Enable the withdrawal address whitelist.
Review the devices connected to your account and log out any you don’t recognize.
