With Anthropic’s IPO, the real test isn’t whether it can tell a trillion-dollar story, but whether it can turn revenue into profit.

According to the prospectus figures provided, Anthropic generated $16.286 billion in revenue in the first half of 2026 and reported a net loss of $80.7 billion. About $72.4 billion of that loss came from changes in the fair value of financial liabilities, rather than actual cash outflows. Operating profit also turned positive in the second quarter.

This shows that its ability to commercialize is improving, but it doesn’t mean its profitability problem has been solved.

The bigger variable is the roughly $800 billion in compute contracts.

Supply-chain companies such as Amazon, Google, Microsoft, Broadcom, and AMD may benefit. But for Anthropic itself, locking in compute capacity ahead of time means committing to enormous costs. If demand growth falls short of expectations or model prices continue to decline, future profits could be squeezed.

Enterprise customers are another key asset.

The number of customers spending more than $100,000 a year has topped 11,900, and net revenue retention is around 900%. The more deeply Claude is embedded in enterprise workflows, the higher the switching costs and the greater the value of each customer. But high retention doesn’t mean growth can continue indefinitely; the question is whether enterprises will keep increasing their spending.

On top of that, the founding team controls 50.1% of the voting rights. Investors aren’t just buying into AI growth; they’re also betting on the management team’s long-term decisions.

In the short term, IPO expectations may continue to boost compute supply-chain companies such as NVDA, AVGO, and AMD. Over the long term, what will truly determine Anthropic’s valuation is whether its revenue growth can outpace its compute costs.

The $1.5 trillion to $2 trillion valuation being discussed in the market is still an expectation, not the final offering price. The higher the valuation, the more demanding the market’s expectations for future profits become.

The AI story can support a valuation, but only profits can sustain it over the long term.
