Crypto Radar | XRPL Proposes 0 XRP Account Creation: Have Network Costs Really Disappeared?
No. Users not needing to hold tokens upfront is not the same as the network no longer incurring costs.
On October 28, CoinDesk reported on the SponsoredAccountCreate proposal. It aims to let new accounts be created with a 0 XRP balance, with existing sponsor accounts taking responsibility for the reserve. For comparison, XRPL’s official documentation currently lists the mainnet base reserve as 1 XRP.
To be clear: someone still has to cover the reserve, and transaction fees do not automatically disappear, though they can be paid through the sponsorship mechanism. Covering the cost on someone’s behalf is not the same as gifting the equivalent amount of XRP to a user’s wallet; the official documentation also notes that sponsored users still control their own keys.
Don’t skip ahead on the status: our review of the original PR found it is still open and has not been merged, and the sponsorship documentation notes that it depends on an amendment. A development proposal should not be presented as already activated on mainnet, let alone used to draw conclusions about the price of $XRP .
What’s worth watching is whether payment applications can lower the barrier to entry for users, and who will bear the costs—not misreading “zero balance” as “the network is free forever.”
