Quantum says 30,000 qubits could break Bitcoin keys in one hour

- Alice & Bob’s quantum computer, using around 30,000 cat qubits, could crack a Bitcoin private key in about an hour, according to their recent preprint.
- Their estimate assumes there are no bit flips during computation. If errors occur, they could significantly increase the number of qubits required, raising the estimate for RSA-2048 from 22,593 to around 45,000 qubits.
- The company emphasized the urgency of organizations transitioning to post-quantum cryptography, highlighting proposals such as BIP-361 to protect Bitcoin against quantum vulnerabilities.
