U.S. September Core PCE + Q3 Advance GDP Preview: Tonight at 20:30, the First Test After the Decision
Event time: Tonight Beijing time (October 29) at 20:30, the U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis (BEA) will release the advance Q3 GDP estimate and September PCE data simultaneously. Initial jobless claims will also be released at the same time, followed by the European Central Bank decision at 21:15.
Market expectations (based on a synthesis of Reuters/Bloomberg survey figures, as cited by ATFX, Binance News, and KuCoin):
- Q3 advance GDP, annualized quarter-on-quarter: around 3.2% expected (some institutions forecast 3.0%–3.2%); previous reading: 2.2%
- September core PCE price index: 0.3% month-on-month expected, versus 0.2% previously; 3.1% year-on-year expected, versus 3.0% previously
- September headline PCE price index: 0.5% month-on-month expected, versus 0.3% previously; 3.7% year-on-year expected, versus 3.4% previously
Looking back at previous readings: Q2 GDP grew at an annualized rate of 2.2%; August core PCE was up 3.0% year-on-year and 0.2% month-on-month. The Fed just held rates steady earlier this morning Beijing time, keeping the federal funds rate at 3.75%–4.00%. The vote was 10–2, with two officials favoring a 25-basis-point hike. Chair Warsh gave no forward guidance on December.
Why it matters: PCE is the inflation gauge the Fed watches most closely, while GDP indicates how resilient growth remains. This is the first set of major data released after the decision, and it directly tests the market’s just-established “higher for longer” pricing. Sticky inflation could boost expectations of a December rate hike, lifting Treasury yields and the dollar and weighing on risk assets, including crypto. Weaker growth, meanwhile, would leave markets weighing both tightening and recession concerns. The transmission chain is: data → December rate-hike pricing → the dollar and Treasury yields → short-term moves in risk assets such as BTC and ETH. BTC is currently around $80,100, near the $80,000 threshold, while ETH is around $2,310; the market is waiting for this data to break the stalemate.
Three scenarios:
- Above expectations (core PCE above 3.1% year-on-year and GDP stronger than 3.2%): Sticky inflation alongside robust growth would further raise December rate-hike expectations. The dollar and Treasury yields would climb, putting short-term pressure on crypto markets, with BTC testing support at the $80,000 threshold.
- In line with expectations (core PCE around 3.1% year-on-year and GDP around 3.2%): Markets would maintain current pricing. Short-term moves would likely be a rally that fades or range-bound trading, with BTC likely continuing to trade between $80,000 and $82,000 as markets await the next set of confirming data.
- Below expectations (cooling core PCE or notably weaker GDP): Rate-hike expectations would ease and risk appetite could recover, opening up room for a short-term rebound in BTC and ETH. However, if the weakness stems from a sharp slowdown in growth rather than simply cooler inflation, the rebound may not last; watch for a return of risk aversion.
My view: Short-term outlook for $BTC is neutral, as markets have already priced in a hawkish hold ahead of the data release. A single set of figures is unlikely to change the direction; the key is whether the combination of inflation and growth upends expectations.
I’ll share an analysis as soon as the data is released. Stay tuned.
