Today's Crypto Briefing | October 29
1) The Fed stayed hawkish and held steady; Bitcoin surged, then got slammed!!! After the statement, it briefly touched around $81.5K–$81.7K, then fell back below $80K during the Asian session (CoinDesk reported it dropping to around $79.8K). In the evening, CoinGecko showed it wobbling back to just over $80.2K; ETH was around $2,320, and SOL was barely holding $100. Samsung/tech earnings sentiment was weak, and risk assets softened across the board. Honestly, holding steady ≠ turning on the taps. Those two dissenting votes for a rate hike from Cook and Hammack are the real story, haha.
2) Funding flows are still tight: Farside reported roughly $137 million in net inflows to U.S. spot BTC ETFs on October 28 (almost all of it into IBIT), but the market still looked weak. Around $356 million in futures positions were liquidated over 24 hours, with longs taking about $205 million of the hit!!! Institutions are nibbling, while leveraged longs are getting carried out first~
3) There's a big event first thing tomorrow: the BTC options expiring Friday at 08:00 UTC on Deribit have roughly $10.8–10.9 billion in notional open interest, based on the public order book. Calls are nearly twice the puts, and the biggest strike is still piled up in the $95K fantasy zone. Some estimate max pain is around $78K—don't treat it like gospel!!! The Fed is barely behind us and now expiry is coming up too, so don't go cranking up leverage recklessly.
4) The regulatory/AI angle is pretty interesting: At the Frontier Forum, CFTC Chair Selig said that “a fridge staking ETH on its own, or even issuing meme coins” is no longer science fiction. He also raised questions like whether we know who's trading on whose behalf and whether we need something like KYA (know-your-agent)~ The market may be getting slammed, but regulators are already turning their attention to AI agents, haha.
Overall: The market is weak tonight, and tomorrow's options expiry is the thing to watch closely. Stay alive out there, folks—don't take “institutions are accumulating” as a signal to pile on leverage!!! Do you think we'll grind toward $78K before expiry, or bounce first?
