Moderna’s token rose 7.2%, with more than six million in trading volume, while the broader market fell. The news was clear: Phase III data came out for the personalized mRNA melanoma vaccine developed in partnership with Merck. Combined with PD-1, it reduced the risk of recurrence or death by 42%. The CEO said the drug could first launch in Germany and Europe in 2028.

That figure is the heart of the story. The same group of pharmaceutical stocks broadly rose in U.S. trading last night, with Moderna simply leading the pack. The token amplified the gains a little further.

There are more than two years of regulatory approvals between the Phase III data and a 2028 launch. That has nothing to do with today’s 7-point gain.
