In the future, buying Bitcoin on legitimate platforms in Russia may involve more than just opening an account and completing identity verification—you may also have to pass a test first!

📢 According to a report by Russian media outlet RBC on October 28, Russia has established testing standards for cryptocurrency investors, and securities brokers are expected to be the first group eligible for testing by the end of November.

Why is there an exam?

Simply put, regulators hope investors will at least understand the basic risks of crypto assets before entering the market. Under Russia’s new cryptocurrency regulatory framework, investors need to carry out related transactions through licensed intermediaries and complete identity verification and testing.

💡 Another important feature of this test: once you pass it, you may be able to use it on multiple compliant platforms.

In other words, the test results are expected to be valid across regulated platforms, instead of having to retake the exam every time you switch platforms. Going forward, securities brokers, crypto trading platforms, and other compliant service providers are expected to adopt a unified question bank and testing process.

⚠️ However, requirements may differ for different types of investors.

Ordinary investors are expected to be able to buy only mainstream crypto assets allowed by regulators, and will need to prove that they understand the basic risks; professional investors may face more complex risk assessments because they can access a wider range of assets.

It should be noted that what has been announced so far is only progress on drafting the testing standards. The specific questions, implementation details, and full rollout timeline still need to await further arrangements.

📌 The change behind this is that Russia is trying to gradually bring cryptocurrency trading, which has been relatively fragmented, under licensed institutions and unified rules. For investors, participating in the market in the future will not only mean judging market trends, but also understanding local regulatory requirements.

The crypto market is becoming more and more mature. What really matters is not just whether you can buy, but whether you clearly understand what you are buying, what risks you are taking on, and how the trading rules are changing.
