Sony is doubling down on onchain—and this time, it’s putting “entertainment IP” on the table 🎮🎵
On Oct 29, Sony Group announced the launch of the Sony Onchain Entertainment Incubation Program, open to startups and creators worldwide. Projects must already be on Soneium (Sony’s own Ethereum L2) or plan to join.
Key points:
1️⃣ Application period: Oct 29 – December 2026; selection period: November 2026 – March 2027 (the official announcement says the timeline may change depending on application volume)
2️⃣ Selected projects will get access to: Soneium’s technical infrastructure, co-creation opportunities with Sony Group companies, business development and marketing support, community resources, and fundraising introductions
3️⃣ Evaluation criteria: originality of the entertainment experience, use of IP, community building, business scalability, track record, and competitive landscape
4️⃣ Since 2024, Sony has run two incubation rounds, selecting 43 projects in total. This round focuses specifically on onchain entertainment
My take:
People have been talking about onchain entertainment for years. What’s been missing was never another public blockchain—it was compelling IP and distribution channels. Sony has music, games, anime, and movies in its portfolio. This time, it explicitly says it wants to move from “technical validation” to “products made for real users”—that matters more than any TPS figure.
But don’t read too much into it: the company hasn’t disclosed the funding amount or said which Sony IPs might be made available. “Co-creation opportunities” ≠ licensing. Teams working on tokenized IP could apply, but don’t get carried away with the hype 😂
Just screening, not hand-holding: entertainment projects in the $ETH ecosystem are worth keeping an eye on.
