⚠️ Monero futures open interest returns to $300 million: bullish signal or overheated leverage?
According to a CoinDesk report on October 21, open interest in Monero (XMR) futures topped $300 million, approaching this year’s record high of about $320 million in January. Open interest denominated in XMR reached about 515,700 coins, a five-week high. Meanwhile, XMR briefly surged to around $656.74 on October 22, its highest level since January.
📊 Key facts
• Open interest rose from about 400,000 to about 516,000 XMR in one week
• XMR traded in a range of about $562–$657 over the past week, then fell back to around $600 over the weekend
• In January this year, “price and leverage rose together” as well; XMR subsequently fell from about $790 to below $300, a drop of roughly 66%
• The price is still about 25% below January’s high of around $800. This is a rebound, not a new high
🔍 How to read this
Rising open interest indicates that money is flowing in, but it also means both longs and shorts are becoming more crowded. History does not repeat mechanically, but if prices turn, high leverage can amplify volatility, and even an ordinary pullback could trigger a cascade of liquidations.
📈 Key levels to watch:
• Support: $583 (recent closing low); if breached, watch the 50-day moving average at around $553
• Resistance: $621 (October 21 closing high); a close above this level could open the way to $657 and January’s high
💬 Does today’s high open interest mean investors are bullish, or is risk building up? Would you chase the rally or wait for a pullback?
