📈 The Most Important Lesson of Livermore’s Trading Career: You Know, It’s a Bull Market!
In *Reminiscences of a Stock Operator*, one person had a profound influence on Livermore’s trading philosophy: Partridge, known as “Old Turkey.”
At the time, a trader in the market had bought a stock and was already sitting on a nice profit. He judged that the market was about to pull back, so he sold his shares and advised Partridge to take profits quickly too, then buy back in once prices fell.
To his surprise, Partridge calmly replied:
“You know, it’s a bull market!”
The other person was baffled: If you know prices might fall in the short term, why not sell first and buy back after they drop?
Old Partridge replied:
“If I sell now, I’ll lose my position.”
Those words later helped Livermore grasp an extremely important lesson about trading:
Real big money isn’t made by catching every short-term fluctuation. It’s made by getting the major trend right and holding on with conviction.
Livermore later summed up his many years of trading experience:
“It was never my judgment that made me a lot of money, but my patience in holding on.”
The same principle applies to today’s BTC and ETH markets.
Many people get the long-term direction right, yet keep trying to sell at short-term highs and buy at short-term lows.
And what happens?
In trying to capture a 5% move, they may miss a trend that brings 50% gains—or even more.

A truly mature trader should understand:
● Getting the trend right takes insight.
● Having the courage to enter a position takes boldness.
● Holding patiently takes discipline.
● Managing risk is the foundation of survival.
Of course, holding patiently doesn’t mean stubbornly holding on no matter what. It assumes that the trend thesis remains intact and that position and leverage risks are kept under control.
The hardest part of trading isn’t predicting the next move up or down. It’s resisting the temptation of short-term fluctuations after getting the big picture right.
Remember what old Partridge said:
“You know, this is a bull market!”
