Everyone was bracing for an extremely hawkish Federal Reserve, but Warsh struck a different tone.
He acknowledged that inflation is still very high, but stopped short of confirming a rate hike in December. He pointed out that consumers are under pressure, but also made it clear that the Fed has yet to reach a firm conclusion on the direction of monetary policy.
At the same time, he cited economic growth and a still-strong labor market as signs of underlying strength.
So why isn't the Fed taking a fully hawkish stance?
Much of the current inflation is due to geopolitical factors beyond the Fed's control. Raising rates too aggressively now could crush demand and push the economy into a recession.
