Microsoft’s AI investment is a certainty; the returns are still up in the air. So what are investors really waiting to see in this earnings report?

Retail investors are waiting for the latter, not the former.

The earnings report needs to answer just one question: Have the names mentioned time and again—Azure and Copilot—turned Microsoft’s ever-growing AI investment into visible revenue growth? If the numbers don’t add up, the bigger the investment, the more the company will have to justify—and the harder the story will be to sell.

The market will first use this report to recalibrate its appetite for risk in U.S. stocks, with the dollar and gold moving accordingly. What will shape that appetite isn’t what’s said at the press conference, but the revenue and growth figures.

Revenue is the yardstick.
