I recently went back and reviewed some open-course materials on agent engineering. The biggest takeaway was this: the barrier to entry in this field isn’t the model—it’s engineering discipline.

Given the same task, a beginner writes one giant prompt and lets the model figure things out, while an experienced engineer writes a bunch of small functions, each with clear inputs and outputs, assertions, and fallback behavior when things fail. The former makes for an impressive demo but falls apart in production; the latter may look unremarkable in a demo but runs for three months without a hitch.

That’s why I don’t really believe things like “prompting tricks” will be valuable in the long run. What matters is putting the model’s unpredictable behavior inside a predictable engineering structure.

If you want to get into this field, don’t start by learning how to ask questions. Start by learning how to test.
