What exactly is the “Merkle tree” often mentioned in exchange proof of reserves?
To prove that a transaction is included in a block, you only need a small number of hashes along the path from that transaction to the Merkle root. The number grows logarithmically with the number of transactions.
If a platform provides proof of reserves, why not follow its official instructions and verify your own balance using a Merkle path?
The header of every $BTC block records a Merkle root that summarizes all the transactions in that block. Currently 80580.
