For people holding $ETH , what they often fear most isn’t market volatility—it’s losing the keys with no one to reimburse them.

📢 On October 28, Google unveiled Google Multi-Party Compute in New York, a service that helps banks custody cryptographic private keys. Put simply, the key no longer sits intact on a single machine. Google is selling a workflow that splits the key, checks the required procedures, and then signs transactions.

Why now?

Of the crypto assets stolen in 2024, 43.8% were lost due to private key leaks, according to Chainalysis. By June this year, blockchain projects had lost a cumulative $16.69 billion to hacks, with about 40% of losses caused by compromised private keys. In June, a foundation member at Humanity Protocol had their private key stolen, draining 17 wallets of $32 million.

So how does it protect them?

A bank can split its signing key into three parts: one held in Google Cloud, one in its own data center, and one with another cloud provider. Transfers must meet a 2-of-3 signature threshold and pass through a policy engine that checks the transaction limit and recipient address.

One important distinction: it protects against key theft and forged authorization instructions. It won’t stop you from being tricked into clicking “confirm,” and it can’t fix vulnerabilities in the signing algorithm itself.

🛡️ The twist is who’s selling it. This space has traditionally been occupied by specialist firms like Fireblocks and BitGo. In 2023, Google was still just teaching customers to build their own MPC systems. Now it’s bringing a product to market, though sales aren’t expected to begin until early 2027, and pricing hasn’t been announced. For institutions, it’s another option; for those firms, it’s a competitor of a very different scale.

📌 What’s really worth watching: Alphabet has already tested the service with its own assets on Ethereum and Solana, making itself the first guinea pig. But Google won’t say which institutions are testing it.

Understanding who’s taking over the infrastructure helps us better see where the money in the next crypto cycle will flow.
