When I first got into crypto, I thought that as long as my technical skills were good enough, I could make consistent profits.
Only later did I realize that some people can analyze the market brilliantly but still lose money in live trading, while others don’t chase trends or try to call tops and bottoms, yet manage to trade more consistently. So what really makes the difference? Often, it’s not that they can’t read the market—it’s that they can’t control their impulses.
I know a trader who once correctly caught several market moves in a row. After making a profit, he got overconfident. When he lost money, he refused to cut his losses, hoping to make it back by holding on. When he was in profit, he rushed to cash out, afraid those gains would disappear. In the end, after all that activity, his account was right back where it started.
What he changed later wasn’t his indicators, but his own trading habits.
These 3 lessons are better learned sooner rather than later:
① Have a plan for every trade.
Think through your entry rationale, stop-loss level, and profit target before placing a trade. Don’t make it up as you go after entering, and don’t change your plan on a whim just because the price moves.
② Take a break after a losing streak.
Losses can make you eager to win it all back, and the more impatient you get, the more likely you are to make poor decisions. Set a daily loss limit for yourself, and stop trading when you hit it. There are opportunities in the market every day, but your capital isn’t unlimited.
③ Don’t let a winning trade go to your head.
Winning a few trades doesn’t mean you’re invincible; losing a few doesn’t mean the next one is bound to win. Don’t raise your leverage on a whim, and never keep adding to a position just to prove you’re right.
After years of trading, I believe more and more in one saying: a true expert isn’t someone who gets the direction right every time, but someone who can afford to be wrong and hold on when they’re right.
If you had to choose, what do you think is the hardest thing to overcome in trading: greed, fear, or the urge to win it all back after a loss? Leave your answer in the comments, and feel free to share some lessons you learned the hard way.$NIL $SOXSB $AVA
