OSMO plans to burn 55.5 million tokens, bringing the total burned to over 100 million!
The Osmosis community has proposed a new plan to permanently burn 55.5 million OSMO from the community pool, equivalent to about 7% of the current total token supply. If approved, the total amount burned will exceed 100 million tokens. The burn is expected to be executed on-chain on October 30.
The key point is that although the OSMO previously held in the community pool was not circulating, it could still have been reused through future governance proposals. Only after being permanently burned will these tokens truly be removed from the supply.
Osmosis has also approved a proposal to stop issuing new OSMO. Ending new issuance while continuing to burn tokens means the token supply mechanism is changing.
However, a burn does not guarantee a price increase. The outlook will still depend on protocol revenue, actual demand, and market liquidity.
