Brazilian market 🇧🇷 plunges— is it really worth buying the dip now?
On October 26, 2026, Brazil’s financial markets suffered a historic plunge! Brazil’s main stock index, the Ibovespa, fell 13.88% in a single day, marking its biggest one-day drop since the pandemic in 2020. Trading even triggered a circuit breaker at one point. Meanwhile, the U.S.-listed Brazilian ETF (EWZ) plunged nearly 20%, and the Brazilian real also depreciated sharply.
What exactly happened?
The immediate trigger for the plunge was Brazil’s presidential election. Incumbent President Lula was reelected, contrary to prior market expectations. Investors worried that fiscal spending would increase, government debt would rise, and there would be less room for interest-rate cuts, prompting a massive outflow of funds.
So, is this a buying opportunity?
I believe the Brazilian market is beginning to present long-term investment opportunities worth watching.
First, this plunge was largely driven by changing political expectations. It doesn’t mean that Brazilian companies’ profitability has deteriorated to the same extent in such a short time.
Second, Brazilian stocks are relatively inexpensive overall, and some companies in banking, energy, and resources have a degree of long-term investment appeal.
But the risks should not be overlooked. Brazil still faces high interest rates, a fiscal deficit, and pressure from currency depreciation. If economic policies fail to restore market confidence, stocks could fall further.
My view:
I don’t recommend blindly making a large investment to buy the dip in the short term. But if your investment horizon is 3–5 years, you could consider building a position gradually through a Brazilian ETF.
What’s really worth watching is whether Brazil can achieve fiscal stability and sustained interest-rate cuts in 2027. If the macroeconomic environment improves, the market may see a valuation recovery.
The moments when the market is most fearful often present opportunities—but low valuations don’t mean there’s no risk.
Do you think this Brazilian market crash is a golden opportunity or a value trap?
