When the Cancun upgrade went live, each block had a target of 3 blobs and a maximum of 6. The Pectra upgrade in May 2025 raised that to a target of 6 and a maximum of 9.
Blobs have their own fee market: the blob base fee adjusts automatically based on the difference between usage and the target, and it is burned as well.
If I’d understood this back then, the tuition I paid could’ve bought me several hotpot meals.
Layer 2 networks pay blob fees, also settled in $ETH , when writing blob data to mainnet.
