The idea of AI Agents spending their own money became reality today.

According to BitRss, Tempo, incubated by Stripe and Paradigm, launched its mainnet today alongside the Machine Payments Protocol (MPP). It lets AI Agents pay for data, computing power, and APIs themselves—without waiting for human approval every time. MPP is open source and works on a “session-based” model: an Agent reserves a sum upfront, then gets charged based on usage, with multiple micropayments eventually aggregated into a single settlement. It’s not limited to the Tempo chain: Visa card payments, Stripe wallets, and the Lightspark Lightning Network are also supported. More than 100 services have already joined at launch.

Meanwhile, Polygon put “reins” on Agents this week with Open Money Stack’s spending controls: set budgets, restrict payment actions, and specify expiration times. If a budget is exceeded or a payment authorization expires, the contract automatically declines the payment—and you can shut it down at any time.

One side lets Agents spend; the other sets rules for them. Put together, that’s what the Agent economy looks like.

Would you dare to give an AI Agent a wallet with a budget? How much would you give it to start?
