Ripple isn’t just talking a big game this time—it has actually secured a bank charter.

On October 27, Ripple announced that the U.S. Office of the Comptroller of the Currency (OCC) had given final approval to establish Ripple National Trust Bank. The process took 15 months, starting with the application in July 2025 and conditional approval in December 2025. Circle received the same kind of final approval first, in July, while Coinbase is still at the conditional-approval stage. This charter is becoming a ticket into the institutional market—not just a label anyone can slap on.

So what can this bank actually do? Let’s make three things clear before getting carried away by “Ripple is opening a bank”:
1. Manage segregated RLUSD reserves, act as collateral trustee for RLUSD holders, and provide digital-asset custody for institutions;
2. It won’t take deposits or make loans, and it won’t have FDIC insurance. It’s not a retail bank as most people understand one;
3. RLUSD will still be issued by New York-regulated Standard Custody. Its market cap is around $2.5–2.6 billion, and its reserves consist of cash-like assets such as dollar deposits and Treasuries, with BNY as the primary reserve custodian. Federal oversight is an additional layer, not a replacement.

My take: This doesn’t mean much for XRP’s price today—XRP is around $1.32, up only about 1% over 24 hours, while the broader market’s BTC has only just climbed back above $80,000. Its significance lies elsewhere: when institutions used to ask, “Who holds the assets, and who do we turn to if something goes wrong?”, the answer can now be written into a federal regulatory framework. The unglamorous work of custody and reserve management is what institutions need to see before they’re willing to put money in.

That said, don’t overstate the story. Community banks are already challenging the OCC’s authority to issue these kinds of charters in court. A charter is a ticket, not a customer order. Whether institutional business translates into real RLUSD usage and revenue remains to be seen over the next few quarters.

This is personal research, not investment advice.
