Coinbase users’ contact information affected; third-party security risks once again draw attention.
On October 28, Coinbase said the security incident involved its data analytics partner Amplitude, and that a small number of users’ contact details were affected. Coinbase said it has found no evidence of unauthorized access to its own systems, that user funds were not affected, and that it will notify affected users and regulators as required by law.
This incident is a reminder that exchange security isn’t just about defending core systems against hackers—third-party service providers can also become points of entry for risk.
Even without financial losses, leaked contact information can still be used for phishing emails, fake customer support, and scam texts. Coinbase users should remain vigilant, avoid trusting supposed account-alert notifications, and never share their passwords, verification codes, or wallet recovery phrases with anyone.
For the crypto industry, third-party supply chain security is just as important. Funds being safe for now doesn’t mean all risks have been eliminated.
