Thailand has taken a groundbreaking step to let tourists use cryptocurrency for everyday purchases. A QR-code payment app called WORPT, which converts stablecoins into Thai baht, has been launched.
🇹🇭 Foreign tourists visiting Thailand will no longer need to carry cash or look for a currency exchange booth. 💵 Users can deposit popular stablecoins like USDT and USDC into the app. 🤳 When shopping, all they need to do is scan Thai QR PromptPay codes—the country’s widely used local payment system—with their phones. 🪙 Local merchants don’t receive cryptocurrency directly. The system instantly converts it in the background, and the merchant receives the local currency, Thai baht (THB), directly.
🛡️ The project was approved under the Thai Securities and Exchange Commission’s (SEC) “Tourist Digipay” regulatory sandbox. 🏢 The app was developed by Waan Exchange and Wipay in partnership with stablecoin giant Tether, major retailer The Mall Group, and payments giant Visa.
💳 Physical Visa Prepaid Cards will be available in mid-November 2026, followed by virtual cards in early 2027. 👛 Both QR-code payments and these Visa cards will draw from a single baht balance. 🎉 The project’s major official launch will take place in November 2026.$HUMA $TAG $SYN
