Gold prices have been looking pretty good these past couple of days, so I’ve started adding gold to my portfolio again. But when you hold gold, are you really just waiting for its price to go up? Could it serve other purposes?
Absolutely! Unlike simply tokenizing gold and silver, HardFi by @strato_net aims to build an on-chain financial system centered around real-world assets. The project has issued two metal-backed tokens, $GOLDST and $SILVST, backed by physical reserves. They can be used directly as CDP collateral to mint the dollar-pegged stablecoin $USDST. The whole setup is quite similar to the DeFi collateralized lending we’re familiar with—the difference is that the underlying assets now include real-world assets like gold and silver, in addition to ETH and BTC.
What’s even more interesting is that after borrowing $USDST against your collateral, you can put it to work in savings vaults, token swaps, and LPs, or swap it across chains for other stablecoins. The project has also integrated a MetaMask Card top-up route, allowing USDST to be converted into USDC for real-world spending. It solves a very practical problem: if you’re bullish on an asset over the long term but need cash flow for now, you don’t necessarily have to sell it first. And these features aren’t just hypothetical—STRATO’s mainnet, CDP, swaps, and liquidity pools are all live!
The BlockApps team behind STRATO was involved in Ethereum’s early development as far back as 2014, building one of the first Haskell clients. In 2015, it also partnered with Microsoft to launch a blockchain cloud service. BlockApps has raised more than $41 million, with investors including Distributed, ConsenSys, and Galaxy Ventures. I think the future potential of HardFi lies in enabling more and more real-world assets to be freely used as collateral, borrowed against, exchanged, and put to work as they move on-chain.
After all, bringing idle assets to life is the real value of RWA.
