Honestly, when I saw this news yesterday, my first thought was: this matters more than the price.
Hyperliquid said it plans to make Kraken’s parent company, Payward, the first CFTC-regulated HIP-3 deployment partner. In plain English: a U.S.-licensed institution wants to use Hyperliquid’s on-chain matching engine directly to offer perpetual futures to U.S. users. Payward subsidiary Bitnomial will build the markets and handle clearing, while customer accounts will be held at NinjaTrader Clearing.
The significance is that, for the first time, a licensed institution may be able to use an on-chain exchange as “infrastructure,” rather than treating it as a regulatory gray area.
But I have to pour some cold water on this too 👇
1. It still needs regulatory approval. The feature is currently only on testnet, and even the team itself says the specs may change. No one can guarantee when it’ll go live.
2. On November 6, around 9.92 million HYPE will be unlocked for core contributors. At the current price of about $78, that’s close to $770 million. An unlock doesn’t necessarily mean a sell-off, but sentiment will likely make a lot of noise about it around then.
3. Competition is heating up. Reports from Glassnode and Fasanara note that its share of RWA perpetuals fell from 80% in July to 26%, with centralized exchanges winning back a sizable chunk.
There’s also something concrete supporting it: the assistance fund has been using fees to buy back tokens, and had accumulated more than 48 million HYPE as of October 13.
It’s now $HYPE 11th by market cap, still about 20% below its September 23 high of 97.96. It’s down around 15% this month, but up 2.5% today—so it’s got a bit of a story of its own while the broader market is dozing 📈
My take: the bullish news is a medium- to long-term narrative, while the unlock is an immediate reality. How things play out around November 6 will say more about how solid the holders are than the news itself. I’ll be watching two things: trading volume before and after the unlock, and whether the HIP-3 mainnet upgrade gets a timeline.
An easy one to answer: if Hyperliquid really gets adopted by US-licensed institutions, do you think that would be a case of “buy the rumor, sell the news” for HYPE, or just the beginning?
