CoinWorld reports that data released Tuesday by France’s National Institute of Statistics and Economic Studies (INSEE) showed the country’s consumer confidence index plunged 5 points to 80 in October, its lowest level since 2013. French households have been hit hard by multiple shocks, including a sell-off in bond markets and protests that escalated into riots. The reading was not only below the Bloomberg survey’s median forecast of 85, but also lower than every economist’s prediction. Recurring bouts of inflation and political and budgetary instability have kept the index below its long-term average of 100 for the past five years. The survey also showed that the share of households expecting prices to rise over the next 12 months increased.
