The real dividing line in the AI industry may not be how powerful the models are, but how many people are willing to pay for them.

Anthropic’s trailing 12-month revenue has grown by around 1,200%—a figure worth paying attention to.

But rather than simply discussing how fast it’s growing, I’m more interested in the question behind that growth.

Why are businesses willing to pay for AI?

Because AI is increasingly being put to work in real-world business settings, such as software development, document processing, data analysis, and enterprise automation.

When AI is no longer just a chat tool, but a productivity tool that can help businesses become more efficient, its commercial value becomes much easier to measure.

However, rapid growth also brings challenges.

Computing costs, R&D investment, market competition, and customer retention will all affect the future of AI companies.

So, to judge how far an AI company can go, we can’t look only at its revenue growth rate—we also need to consider whether that growth is sustainable.

Who do you think will win in the AI industry: the companies with the most powerful models, or those that achieve profitability at scale first?
