Strategy pauses BTC purchases and instead spends $205 million buying back STRC! What signal does this send?
Strategy, which has always stuck to “just keep buying Bitcoin,” has made a notable change this time.
According to its latest disclosure, from October 19 to 25, Strategy neither bought nor sold BTC. Instead, it spent about $204.9 million to repurchase 2.068 million shares of STRC preferred stock. The company still holds 848,517 BTC.
Why do this?
I think the key is that Strategy not only needs to hold Bitcoin, but also manage its financing costs.
STRC is a floating-dividend preferred stock. Buying back these shares could reduce future dividend payments. But at the same time, that money can no longer be used to keep buying BTC.
Even more noteworthy, Strategy’s regular cash balance has fallen to about $242.4 million. It also has $4.83 billion in U.S. dollar reserves, primarily to cover preferred stock dividends and debt interest. These two pools of funds serve different purposes.
So this doesn’t necessarily mean Strategy is bearish on Bitcoin. Rather, it shows that the company also has to choose between accumulating BTC and managing its financing structure.
Next, I’ll be watching closely to see when it resumes buying coins, how its cash balance changes, and whether it continues to buy back preferred stock.
After all, holding BTC for the long term is important to Strategy, but so is being able to secure funding consistently and on reasonable terms.
Do you think this move is an effort to optimize its capital structure, or does it mean Strategy’s ability to buy coins in the short term is weakening?
