$SOL : The overall account long/short ratio is 3.11 (75.7% long / 24.3% short), up from 3.09 an hour ago.
At first, I thought a long/short ratio above 1 meant there were more long positions than short positions across the whole market. It took me a while to understand: the account long/short ratio counts accounts, so a small account and a large account each count as one. It has nothing to do with which side has more positions across the market—the total number of long and short positions is always equal.
The long/short ratio alone can’t tell you whether prices will rise or fall. It’s usually best to compare it with open interest, funding rates, and price.
The point of understanding an indicator is to avoid being spooked by the numbers, not to use it to predict price movements precisely.
