BlackRock and SBI are turning their attention to yen stablecoins this time.
According to a report by The Block cited by Wu Blockchain, BlackRock Financial Management and BlackRock Japan have signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Japanese financial group SBI Holdings and Startale Group to explore connecting tokenized money market funds (MMFs) with the yen stablecoin JPYSC. The collaboration will focus on technical infrastructure, business models, distribution channels, and regulatory frameworks, with plans to open it up to other financial institutions in Japan and overseas. JPYSC is issued by SBI Shinsei Trust Bank, while SBI VC Trade is responsible for its distribution.
One scenario to watch: if the partnership results in a concrete product, the tokenized Treasury and yen stablecoin ecosystems will gain another heavyweight player, while Japanese infrastructure providers such as Startale (the team behind Astar) may also attract greater attention, potentially bringing renewed interest to the RWA narrative. Another possibility is that, as the partnership is still at the MOU stage, it may not directly catalyze prices in the short term. The scale of on-chain adoption and the eventual product format will be the key things to watch.
Which would you rather see first: the launch of a subscription channel for tokenized MMFs, or the expansion of JPYSC's distribution network?
