Affecting 27%, Microsoft is exploring voluntary departures for employees in four countries.

To save on AI spending, Microsoft began sending emails last night to around 60,000 employees, offering them voluntary departure packages. Employees who accept will receive compensation and can choose either to take the money and leave or stay on, though they may still be laid off in the future.

The offer is limited to employees at Level 70 and below in the United States, Canada, India, and the United Kingdom, including those in senior roles.

Microsoft’s workforce had remained stable since 2022, but this year the company has invested heavily in AI and data centers. This spending has severely squeezed budgets for other departments, as well as resources for staffing and hiring.

If Microsoft succeeds, many other major companies are expected to follow suit under pressure from AI spending.
