Most people who miss out on lower Binance fees don't pick the wrong code. They pick no code at all, or they enter it at the wrong moment. The fix is simple: sign up with code 20LESSFEES and every Spot and Futures trade costs a flat 20% less in fees, for as long as you trade, with the welcome bonus of up to $19,800 for eligible users on top.

👉 Sign up on Binance with a bonus and 20% off trading fees

Below are the seven mistakes that cost new users that discount most often, each with a worked example and a way to avoid it. Read them once before you register and you won't have to fix anything later.

What a sign-up code actually does

A sign-up code is a short tag attached to your account at the moment it is created. It does not move money, change your login or give anyone access to your account. Its only job is to tie a fee discount to your new account.

  • 20% off Spot fees: the regular 0.1% per trade becomes 0.08%.

  • 20% off USDⓈ-M Futures fees: the regular 0.05% taker fee becomes 0.04%, and the 0.02% maker fee becomes 0.016%.

  • Permanent, not a promo window: the discount applies to every trade, not just your first week.

  • Welcome bonus as an extra: new-user tasks worth up to $19,800 for eligible users, the same amount with any code.

That last point matters more than it sounds, and it leads straight into the first few mistakes.

Mistake 1 - Opening the account first and looking for a code later

This is the most common one by far. Someone downloads the app, signs up in two minutes, makes a first deposit, and only then searches for a way to cut fees. By that point it is too late, because the code field only exists on the registration screen.

There is no setting in a finished account where you can paste a code afterwards. Support can't add it for you either.

How to avoid it: decide on the code before you tap Register. If you already opened an account without one, your remaining options are paying fees with BNB and, at higher volume, VIP levels. Both are covered in our breakdown of Binance Spot and Futures trading fees.

Mistake 2 - Not checking the code field before you finish

When you open the sign-up link, 20LESSFEES is usually filled in for you. Usually is the key word. Switching from the browser to the app halfway through, using a different link, or clearing the form can leave the field empty.

  1. Open the sign-up link in your browser or the Binance app.

  2. Enter your email or phone number and continue.

  3. Type the 6-digit verification code Binance sends you.

  4. Look at the code field: it should read 20LESSFEES. If it's empty, type it exactly, with no spaces.

  5. Finish registration, then complete identity verification and turn on 2FA.

  6. The Binance registration form. Check the code field before you complete step 5.

A typo counts as no code. "20LESSFEE" or "20 LESS FEES" won't give you the discount, so it's worth a two-second look.

Mistake 3 - Expecting the code to make the welcome bonus bigger

Many pages online suggest that one code unlocks a larger bonus than another. On Binance the welcome bonus works the same way with every code: up to $19,800 for eligible users, earned through tasks.

What actually differs between codes is the fee discount. That is the part you should compare.

  • A code with no fee discount: welcome bonus tasks only.

  • 20LESSFEES: the same welcome bonus tasks plus 20% off Spot and Futures fees.

So the question is never "which code has the biggest bonus" but "which code also lowers what I pay on every trade".

Mistake 4 - Reading "up to $19,800" as a guaranteed payout

"Up to" is doing real work in that sentence. The welcome bonus is split into tiers, and each tier asks for a net deposit, a trading volume, or both, within a time limit. You unlock the reward for the tiers you complete, and eligibility depends on your account and region.

The new-user task table shows net deposit, trading volume, reward and time limit for each tier.

How to avoid it: after you sign up, open the task list in your account and read the conditions for the first tier only. Treat any reward as a bonus for what you were going to do anyway, not as a target. Tasks and amounts change over time, so the numbers in your account are the ones that count.

Mistake 5 - Forgetting that Futures fees hit the full position

Beginners often think the 20% discount is small change. On Spot that's partly true at low volume. On Futures it adds up quickly, because the fee is charged on the full position size, not on the margin you put in.

USDⓈ-M Futures fee rates by level. Regular users start at 0.0200% maker and 0.0500% taker.

Say you put $500 of margin into a 10x long. Your position is worth $5,000.

  • Opening with a market order: $5,000 x 0.05% = $2.50.

  • Closing with a market order: another $2.50, so $5.00 per round trip.

  • With 20% off: $4.00 per round trip, so you keep $1.00 each time.

  • Twenty round trips a month: $100 in fees at the regular rate versus $80 with the discount.

Twenty dollars a month on a $500 account is 4% of your margin, every month, before you win or lose a single trade. Using limit orders where you can cuts it further, since the maker rate is lower.

Mistake 6 - Making trades just to chase the bonus

Trading volume tasks tempt some people into trades they would never have made. That can turn a reward into a loss.

Here is how it can go wrong. A tier asks for a certain Futures volume, and a new user opens and closes large leveraged positions to hit it. Even with 20% off, $100,000 of taker volume costs $40 in fees, and a few bad price moves on leverage can cost far more than any reward.

  • Do the math first: multiply the required volume by your fee rate to see what the task costs before you start.

  • Use Spot where the task allows it: no liquidation risk while you learn.

  • Skip tiers that don't fit you: the lower fees still work whether you finish any task or not.

Mistake 7 - Trusting fake bonus pages and code sellers

Sign-up codes are free. Anyone who asks you to pay for a "special" code, send crypto to unlock a bonus, or share a verification code is running a scam.

  • Only register on binance.com or in the official app, and check the address bar.

  • Never share your password, 2FA codes or the 6-digit email code with anyone.

  • Ignore DMs promising guaranteed returns or a bigger bonus for a fee.

  • Turn on 2FA before your first deposit, not after something goes wrong.

One more trap that looks harmless: opening a second account to "redo" sign-up with a code. Binance allows one personal account per person, and a duplicate can be restricted. Get it right the first time instead.

A first month with and without the code

Numbers make the difference easier to see. Picture a new user who deposits $1,000 and trades in a fairly normal way for a month.

  • Spot: $4,000 of buys and sells. Regular fees $4.00, with the code $3.20.

  • Futures: $50,000 of taker volume across small positions. Regular fees $25.00, with the code $20.00.

  • Total for the month: $29.00 without the code, $23.20 with it, so $5.80 stays in the account.

$5.80 isn't life-changing. But it repeats every month, it grows with your volume, and it costs nothing to set up. Over a year of the same activity that's about $70, and an active Futures trader can save many times more.

FAQ

Does the 20% discount expire after a while?

No. It's a flat 20% off Spot and USDⓈ-M Futures trading fees on the account you opened with the code, applied to each trade automatically.

Can I use the code if I sign up on the app instead of the website?

Yes. The code field appears in the app's registration flow too. Just check that it's filled in before you finish.

Do I have to complete any task to get the fee discount?

No. The fee discount works on its own. The welcome bonus tasks are optional extras.

Does paying fees with BNB still help?

Yes. Paying fees in BNB is a separate setting that can lower your fees further. Turn it on in your account if you hold BNB.

What if I already have a Binance account?

The code can only be attached to a new account, so it can't be added to an existing one. Lower fees there come from BNB fee payment and VIP levels.

Disclosure: 20LESSFEES is my code. If you use it, I may earn a commission from Binance at no extra cost to you. Crypto and Futures trading carry a high risk of loss. This is not financial advice.
