Meta Q3: Net Income Surges 264%, Free Cash Flow Turns Negative—What Crypto Traders Should See in This Balance Sheet

Meta’s Q3 2026 revenue was $64.6 billion, up 26% year over year and above expectations. Net income was $9.86 billion, surging 264% year over year. Looking only at these two figures, it seems Zuckerberg’s AI gamble has paid off.

But look one line further down: operating income was $12.99 billion, down 37% year over year; free cash flow was -$2.12 billion. The surge in net income is an accounting illusion caused by last year’s low base. What really ate into profits was $9.89 billion in settlements for lawsuits over teen mental health. Ads are still making money, but growth is coming more from higher prices (+14%) than from user growth (daily active users up just 3%). Meta may already be hitting a ceiling.

What should really put traders on alert is the bill for future spending commitments: about $825 billion, including $355.7 billion in data center and energy infrastructure leases not yet on the balance sheet, with lease terms extending to 2036. The full-year capital expenditure guidance was also raised to $135 billion–$145 billion. Muse surpassed 10 million installs in the U.S. and Canada in six weeks, with 25% daily active usage, but Meta itself put computing constraints on the table during the earnings call. The gap between user growth and infrastructure spending is what investors really need to watch over the next few quarters.

Meta is propping up its AI narrative with its advertising cash cow even as free cash flow turns negative; the crypto market is relying on ETF inflows to sustain risk appetite, and breaks down as soon as they dry up. The same macro constraint is tightening on both fronts. Meta briefly rose 6% after hours before giving back some gains. The market didn’t punish it, but it didn’t truly buy in either.
