You may have only wanted to make a Bitcoin transfer faster, but instead, you could end up falling into a hacker’s trap.
📢 A security vulnerability has been discovered in Electrum, a long-standing Bitcoin software wallet. A malicious server could replace a user’s original transaction with a forged one, tricking the user into signing a transaction that sends Bitcoin to a hacker when they try to increase the transaction fee.
Developers received reports of two related incidents in October, and at least one user confirmed losing Bitcoin. The amount stolen has not yet been disclosed.
📌 How did the hackers pull it off?
In short, after a user sends a Bitcoin transaction, if it remains unconfirmed for a while, they can usually choose to increase the fee to get it included in a block sooner.
But in affected older versions, a malicious server could take the opportunity to replace the pending transaction. The user might think they are only adding a fee, when in fact they could be signing a different transfer.
Even more subtly, the attacker could make the last few characters of the recipient address match those of the original address, making it harder to spot the irregularity at a glance.
⚠️ What should you do now?
Update your wallet immediately: Electrum released version 4.8.3 on October 24 to fix the vulnerability. Older versions may still be affected.
Check addresses carefully: Before signing, always verify the full recipient address and the transfer amount.
Stay alert: If a transaction gets stuck, don’t increase the fee without checking first.
Update through official channels: Don’t download wallet installers from unknown sources just because you’re worried about being hacked.
The report notes that users who connect only to servers they trust (including servers they operate themselves) are not affected by this specific attack.
🔥 The real takeaway: Securing crypto assets means more than protecting your recovery phrase. Wallet software, connected servers, and every transaction signature can all be links in the chain of risk.
