Wild! BNB Chain is planning to build a new Layer 1 in parallel without issuing a separate token. This “multiple chains, one coin” arrangement is certainly unusual! The project is tentatively called New L1 and has no official name yet. An internal multi-validator devnet is already running, a public testnet is planned for the end of 2026, and the mainnet is targeted for early 2027, though the timeline could still change.

According to the original article, the new chain will handle transactions that require low latency, while the existing BNB Smart Chain will continue to support services such as current DeFi applications and trading platforms. The two chains are planned to connect through a native bridge that is still under development, allowing users to transfer BNB from BSC. BNB will continue to be used for fees and staking on both chains. Staked tokens will generate non-transferable govBNB voting power on a 1:1 basis.

The new chain targets a block every 200 milliseconds and transaction pre-confirmation in about 20 milliseconds. An enhanced version of Parlia consensus uses BLS voting, with the goal of finalizing transaction ordering within one second. However, pre-confirmation only indicates that a transaction may be included; it could still be reversed before final settlement. The network also plans to offer per-lane capacity, account abstraction, and an optional privacy pool. The privacy system still requires an audit and additional trusted setup, and the documentation warns against testing it with real funds. Some Ethereum RPC methods and transaction types are also incompatible.

The plan comes amid growing activity in tokenized financial products on BNB Chain. The original article cites an October 23 report stating that tokenized stock trading volume was about $25.6 billion in the third quarter. At quarter-end, tokenized equity supply was about $1.13 billion, with around 1.8 million holders; transaction volume reached 1.51 billion, and network revenue rose 54% to $54.2 million. These figures provide context; they do not mean the new chain will necessarily drive more activity or demand for BNB.

The impact on the crypto market is currently fairly neutral: the performance targets and shared BNB mechanism could broaden the scope for applications, but the new chain has not yet launched publicly, and the bridge, privacy features, and timeline all remain to be delivered. The original article also notes that the August 25 Pasteur hard fork increased throughput from 1,237 to 2,324 transactions per second in controlled tests. This does not prove that the mainnet will achieve a comparable improvement. Do you think sharing BNB could make a multi-chain architecture more appealing?
