#OCC finalizes stablecoin regulatory rules

The rules for stablecoins in the United States are now in place.
The Office of the Comptroller of the Currency has finalized the rules implementing the GENIUS Act.
This is the most concrete step yet toward putting the law into effect.

The scope is very specific.
It covers permitted payment stablecoin issuers,
foreign issuers under OCC jurisdiction,
and certain custody activities.
Reserve backing, redemptions, and risk management are all addressed.

Treasury Secretary Bessent made a sweeping claim.
He called this a turning point for the U.S. financial industry.
He also compared it to the National Currency Act of 1863.

One area has been left open.
The final rules do not include provisions on the Bank Secrecy Act, anti-money laundering, or OFAC sanctions.
Those will be added later in coordination with the Treasury Department.

The timeline is set, too.
Both the Act and the rules take effect on January 18, 2027.
The OCC has yet to say when issuers can submit applications.

For crypto, stablecoins are moving out of a gray area and into a licensing framework.
Those that comply will be best positioned to attract the next wave of institutional funding.

Which do you think will gain traction faster: bank-backed or crypto-native stablecoins? Share your thoughts in the comments.
