Zcash upgrade next month: blocks will be 3× faster—will the ZEC in old wallets be locked up?
Have you had ZEC sitting untouched for years? Now’s the time to dig it out and check.
Zcash’s NU7 upgrade has been incorporated into the specification (ZIP 259), with mainnet activation set for block height 3,543,405. The announcement for node software Zakura 1.7.0 estimates activation at 00:50 UTC on November 6, which is around 8:50 a.m. Beijing time that same day. The announcement summary says “around November 5,” but the exact time in the body is 00:50 UTC on the 6th—morning on the 6th in Beijing. Don’t let secondhand reports throw you off.
Here are the three key points:
1. Faster block times: The target block interval will drop from 75 seconds to 25 seconds—three times faster. For everyday users, the most noticeable change will be shorter confirmation wait times.
2. The old Sprout pool is closing: After the upgrade, all v4 transactions will become invalid, and transfers from the Sprout pool can only be represented using v4 transactions. The specification puts it plainly: any funds remaining in the Sprout pool will be unspendable.
3. The supply cap stays the same: The specification states that these changes will not increase ZEC’s supply cap. It will also remove 60% of transaction fees from circulation.
Here’s the hard truth: the upgrade won’t wait for you. Many people don’t even know which pool their ZEC is in. If they only remember on activation day, it’ll be too late.
One more reminder: ZIP 259 is still marked “Proposed” on the specifications website. Refer to node software updates and future official announcements for the latest details.
Check these three things:
1. Does your old wallet have a balance at a Sprout address (usually starting with zc)?
2. If so, use a compatible wallet to transfer it to a newer pool or a transparent address before activation.
3. If your ZEC is on an exchange, watch for the platform’s announcements about deposits and withdrawals during the upgrade. Follow the platform’s guidance.
