One coin across multiple chains? Is BNB Chain really building another chain this time? 🔗
BNB Chain is developing a new Layer 1 network called NewL1, which will coexist with the existing BNB Smart Chain rather than replace it. Founder CZ summed up his response to the plan in just one sentence: “Multiple chains, one coin.”
Let’s get the key point clear first: the new chain won’t issue a new coin. $BNB will be its native asset, used for transaction fees, staking, and governance. The plan is to connect the two chains with a native cross-chain bridge, though that bridge is still under development.
This chain is designed for use cases that are difficult to accommodate directly on BSC: trading, payments, privacy, and AI. The development network’s stated specs are a 200-millisecond block interval and pre-confirmation in about 20 milliseconds. But the documentation itself notes that pre-confirmations can be revoked and development network parameters may change, so these are development-stage metrics, not launch guarantees.
The timeline is: testnet targeted for the end of 2026, mainnet targeted for early 2027. The project is currently still in internal development.
In my view, the most important thing to watch isn’t the speed figures, but the decision not to issue a new coin. The new chain’s value won’t depend on creating another asset; instead, it will add directly to the range of use cases for BNB. The risks are just as clear: whether the testnet launches on time, and whether the hard parts—like bridging and privacy—can be delivered, will determine whether this is truly another chain or just another concept. Getting the concept out first and delivering later is the real test for this chain.
