$40 billion—that’s one deal that could still get done in the debt financing market over the past few weeks.

Musk said on X that over the past few weeks, the debt financing market has nearly shut its doors to companies with no revenue beyond AI data centers. His own deal got done thanks to an investment-grade credit rating and revenue from Starlink and rocket launches.

It’s the same door: on one side, $40 billion has already come through; on the other, more than 200 emerging cloud providers are waiting outside. He expects many of these companies to fail, the industry to consolidate, and only a handful to remain.

The two numbers line up: $40 billion and more than 200 companies aren’t moving in opposite directions. They’re on either side of the same door, sorted by credit rating and revenue. The money hasn’t disappeared; it’s flowing to the side with ratings and revenue.
