Take extra care to keep your cryptocurrencies safe. A critical vulnerability in Electrum (versions earlier than 4.8.3) allowed complex attacks using RBF.
The criminals falsified transaction histories to deceive victims and trick them into signing a transfer directly to the criminals. They also used character spoofing to create fake addresses that ended with the same 4 digits as the real address, exploiting users’ visual trust.
How to protect yourself:
- Update immediately to version 4.8.3 or later.
- Don’t increase transaction fees without checking all the details.
- Always verify the full address before signing, and don’t be fooled by the false sense of security provided by the last 4 characters.
