Ethereum’s Cancun upgrade (Dencun) went live on March 13, 2024. Its key change was EIP-4844, also known as Proto-Danksharding.
Layer 2 networks only need to ensure that anyone can access transaction data to verify the results during the period when verification is needed; the mainnet does not need to store this data forever.
When demand for blobs surges, blob fees will rise too, so Layer 2 fees won’t always be that cheap.
